Vol. 207 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Intoxicating Liquor Bottles.

35.

asked the Minister for Industry if, in view of the Government's aim for freer trading conditions and the great interest in new and better packing, he will consider revoking or amending the Intoxicating Liquor (Standardisation of Bottles) (No. 3) Order, 1925, and allow any size of container to be used, if the net content is clearly stamped on the bottle, and thereby promote greater interest in design and greater competition among the breweries.

The existing legislation protects the consumer of bottled ale, beer, stout and porter by confining the legal sizes of bottles to three well-defined and popular sizes—pint, ½ pint and ? pint.

I cannot agree that it is necessary to repeal this provision to enable the aims mentioned by the Deputy to be achieved.
