Vol. 207 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - ESB Public Lighting.

47.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Local Government the amount paid annually by the Dublin County Council to the Electricity Supply Board in respect of public lighting supplied by the Board; and whether the agreement between the Council and the Board permits the Board to use lamp standards on public highways for the exhibition of large notice boards with advertisements for the ESB, house-builders and suppliers of household furniture.

The annual cost of public lighting provided by the Electricity Supply Board to Dublin County Council varies from year to year. I am informed that the cost in the year ended 31st March, 1963, was £24,548. I understand that the public lighting poles in the County Dublin area to which notices have been affixed are the property of the ESB and that the agreement between the council and the board contains no condition concerning the exhibition of notices.

48.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Local Government if, having regard to frequent failures of public street lamps in Dublin County, which are often not remedied for a week or more thereby causing danger and inconvenience to road users, he will ensure that the Dublin County Council, or those responsible for the maintenance and repair of such lights, carry out daily inspections and remedy all failures immediately they are detected.

I am informed that the Dublin County Council is satisfied that, in general, failures in the public lighting system in the county are remedied without undue delay.
