Vol. 207 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Import of Second-hand Tyres.

13.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce (a) the number of second-hand tyres imported duty free for horse-drawn vehicles in each of the years 1939, 1940, 1942, 1945, 1948, 1960 and 1963; and (b) if he will grant a similar concession in respect of tractor trailers used for agricultural purposes or, alternatively, allow a fifty per cent tariff reduction in respect of such tractor trailers.

I regret that statistics are not available in respect of imports of second-hand tyres for horse-drawn vehicles for the years referred to.

If the inquiry in the second part of the Deputy's question relates to second-hand tyres for tractor-trailers for agricultural use, the position is that facilities are granted at the present time for the importation of such tyres at a reduced rate of duty. For administrative reasons, however, the import facilities must be confined to firms engaged in the assembly or construction of these vehicles.

Can the Minister indicate who these firms are?

No; I am sorry I have not got that information.

Can the Minister convey the names to me?

I shall convey the Deputy's request to the Minister.
