Vol. 207 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Secondary School Grants.

22.

andMr. Pattison asked the Minister for Education whether it is his intention to alter the system of grant allocation in the provision of secondary schools; and if so, in what way.

As has been announced by An Taoiseach, the Government intends to provide direct building grants for secondary schools. Furthermore, the Estimates for 1964/65 will include added provision to enable the capitation grants payable in respect of secondary pupils to be substantially increased.

Could the Minister say in what proportion, or will there be a fixed proportion in regard to the grant for the building of a secondary school? Will it be fixed or will it relate to each individual secondary school?

I think the main principle will be a fixed proportion. There will be a scheme.

Does the Minister know the details of the scheme?

I do. It will be a fixed proportion on a percentage basis.

Can the Minister say when he will be in a position to announce the scheme?

I hope to announce it in a couple of weeks.
