Vol. 208 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Wexford Drainage Scheme.

12.

asked the Minister for Finance (1) the present position regarding the Ounavarragh drainage scheme, County Wexford; (2) whether it is proposed to have this work carried out by the Office of Public Works or by a private contractor; (3) when it is proposed to commence the work; and (4), if the Office of Public Works will carry out the work, the approximate number of local men who will be employed.

This scheme has been exhibited. The statutory period within which observations were receivable expired on 22nd February, 1964. As required by the Act, the Commissioners of Public Works are now in consultation with other Government Departments, following which they will submit the Scheme to the Minister for Finance for consideration. It is intended to have the works carried out by contract, if a satisfactory tender is obtained. The necessary plans, specifications and documents are being prepared for the invitation of tenders. That involves a lot of detailed work, and will take some months. Until the tenders have been considered, I cannot say when works can be commenced, but I expect it to be towards the end of this year.
