Vol. 208 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Clondalkin (Dublin) Public Telephones.

22.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if in view of the very big increase in population in Clondalkin, County Dublin he will make arrangements to have two extra public telephones provided in the region of Monastery Park and also in the centre of the town.

The circumstances do not at present warrant additional public telephones in the places in question but the position will be kept under review.

May I ask the Minister if he has any information in relation to the call load—I use that term for want of a better one—on the main kiosk in the centre of the village of Clondalkin because I pass through Clondalkin at least twice a day and there is always a queue outside the kiosk?

We know that the kiosk in the village is heavily used but there are other considerations. There is underground cabling work to be done in the area and there are many applications for private telephones in Monastery Park which will be dealt with when the underground cables are laid. We also know that there may be some further housing development there. The matter is under review and the likelihood is that there will be necessity for further public telephone facilities in the area. We cannot deal with them at the moment.

The Minister is aware that there are only two public telephones in the area——

There are two.

——and there is a population of between 12,000 and 15,000 in Clondalkin at the present time and it is a growing population.

One of the public telephones is heavily used and the other is not so heavily used.

The second one is in a rather remote situation.
