Vol. 209 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - West Galway Forestry Lands.

43.

asked the Minister for Lands the townlands in West Galway where land has been offered to his Department for afforestation, the areas in which inspections have been carried out, and the areas which have been approved.

Forestry acquisition statistics are not kept on a constituency basis. In County Galway as a whole there were 315 areas with a total area of 22,922 acres on offer for State Forestry purposes at a recent date. Offers had been accepted in 63 cases with a total area of 2,461 acres and negotiations for the purchase of 53 areas totalling 3,545 acres were in progress. Of the balance, 114 cases involving a total of 8,890 acres had been inspected and further enquiries were being made; 85 cases totalling 8,026 acres were at the preliminary stages of investigation.

44.

asked the Minister for Lands if an area of land has been offered for forestry purposes by the tenants of Gowla, Cashel, Connemara, County Galway; and if so, when he expects to be in a position to have it taken over and planted.

An area of 1,380 acres in Gowla townland was offered to the Forestry Division of my Department in 1960. The area was not acquired because it was considered unsuitable for forestry purposes.

45.

asked the Minister for Lands if it is the intention of his Department to complete the planting of the area taken over in the townland of Glanaruid, Kilkerrin, Connemara, County Galway.

The balance of the lands held by the Forestry Division in Glanaruid are unplantable because of exposure and poor soil conditions and no further planting is contemplated.
