Vol. 209 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Effect of Television on Eyesight.

15.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he has received any complaints in regard to the effect of television on eyesight; and if he has any advice to offer on the matter.

I have received no complaints of this kind. I am informed that sustained viewing, like sustained reading, may cause some temporary fatigue of the eyes but that there is no medical evidence to suggest that television has any adverse effect on eyesight.

Has the Minister any suggestion to offer for those who are affected?

Perhaps it is a political disease.

You are suffering from a lot of it. Would the Minister look into the matter? I have had several complaints.

I have had no complaints.

Would the Minister consult his medical colleague by his side?

Medical opinion has been got on the matter already.

A lot of the stuff is so bad it would be no harm to switch it off.
