Vol. 209 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Attendance Act.

76.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Education if, in the interests of children whose education is being neglected because of difficulties in the enforcement of the School Attendance Act in Dublin, he will introduce legislation and take such other steps as may be necessary to overcome existing difficulties.

I am aware that certain difficulties have arisen recently in relation to the enforcement of the School Attendance Act in the Dublin city area. I am having the matter examined with a view to seeing what measures may be necessary to overcome the difficulties.

Mr. Ryan

May I take it that, if the Minister finds legislation is necessary to overcome this difficulty, he will introduce that legislation without delay? The matter is extremely urgent because many children are being neglected at the moment in Dublin, due to the inadequate provisions rendering the Act incapable of enforcement?

There certainly will not be any delay with regard to any steps it will be possible to take.
