asked the Minister for Education the number of children committed to industrial schools and reformatories during the year 1963, and the number of such children who were so committed on account of poverty or lack of suitable guardians.

There were 490 children committed to industrial schools during the year ended on 31st December, 1963. Of these 358 were committed on the grounds of lack of proper guardianship. No child was committed on the grounds of destitution. In the year concerned, 101 youthful offenders were committed to reformatories.
