Vol. 209 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Stations.

78.

asked the Minister for Justice whether he has received representations from the people of Glaslough, County Monaghan in connection with the proposed closure of the Garda station; and whether in the light of these representations, he will reconsider the decision to withdraw the Garda station from Glaslough.

I have received the representations referred to by the Deputy. I am at present considering the question of closing the Garda station at Glaslough, and shall give full consideration to these representations.

79.

asked the Minister for Justice whether he has proposals to close any one of the following Garda stations, viz. Ballyforan, Taughmaconnell and Clonark, County Roscommon; and whether in view of the strong feeling in these areas that the stations should be retained, he is willing to receive deputations from the area affected to hear the views of the local people.

I have no proposals for the closing of any of the stations mentioned by the Deputy.

The question of reorganising the policing arrangements for the areas administered by these stations is at present under examination by the Commissioner, Garda Síochána. In reply to representations which I have received regarding the possible closing of any of these stations, I have already indicated that I will give every consideration to representations which the residents of the affected area may wish to make, either direct or through their public representatives.

Sir, I omitted to include Lecarrow in the question. May I ask the Minister if he will let me know what the position is in regard to that station?

I take it the Minister will receive a deputation from any area in which a station is likely to be closed?

Anybody from Roscommon, in the form of a deputation or otherwise, is always welcome.

The Minister is very courteous in that respect. What we want to know is: is Taughmaconnell on the list for the hatchet?

It all depends on what the Deputy means by "the hatchet". As I said, there is no proposal at the moment for closing it, but the whole question of policing arrangements in Roscommon is under consideration. If the question of closing this station arises, and the matter comes before me, I will consider any representations the Deputy may wish to make, either himself personally or through the medium of a deputation. I shall be happy to receive any representations.

I thank the Minister for that, but I hope he sees the difficulty involved with regard to the three or four stations. The rumour is abroad that one is to be closed. There is no certainty as to which it is and the Minister would allay a great deal of uneasiness if he were able to indicate which of the stations is likely to be closed. Indeed, that would mean a saving to himself because he would not have to receive several deputations; instead of having to meet deputations from three or four areas, he would have to meet only one.

May I say I am growing more and more reluctant to agree to the closing of any station?

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Justice when it is expected that Gardaí will vacate the present station in Crumlin Village, Dublin, and move into the new station.

The contract for the new Garda station at Crumlin is due for completion on 30th November, 1964. The Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Finance has informed me that the work is proceeding satisfactorily and that if the present rate of progress is maintained the station may be finished and ready for occupation before the contract date.
