Vol. 209 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cross-Border Lorry Traffic.

20.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware of the delays in clearing lorries travelling across the Border from North to South, which inhibit the free flow of traffic between here and the Six Counties; and if in the interests of trade between both areas he will try to ensure a more rapid clearance.

I am not aware that in general there is any undue delay in clearing lorries crossing the land frontier. Occasionally some delay may occur due to simultaneous arrival of a large number of lorries and the fact that a particular road may not be wide enough to cater for more than one line of traffic in each direction.

Every effort is made to eliminate any avoidable hold-up. Accordingly, if the Deputy would furnish particulars of any undue delays of which he may be aware, I will undertake to have them investigated.

Is the Minister aware that labour had to be let go recently in New Ross, due to a delay in lorries crossing the Border and the raw material coming down? Would the Minister look further into the matter?

I was not aware of it until I heard it just now from the Deputy. I shall investigate the matter.
