Vol. 209 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Owenass River Flooding.

24.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will take immediate steps to have the Owenass River widened, deepened and cleaned, as in its present condition it is causing severe flooding to thousands of acres of land and general inconvenience to all local landowners and others.

The Owenass river up as far as Mountmellick Bridge is included in the Barrow Drainage Scheme carried out under the Barrow Drainage Acts 1927 and 1933 and maintained by the Barrow Drainage Board. Further improvements to the Owenass could only be undertaken as part of a scheme for the entire catchment under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945. The Barrow is No. 23 on the priority list of major catchments. At the present stage I cannot say when it will be reached.
