Vol. 209 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Remuneration of Rate Collectors.

58.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that rate collectors who are paid on poundage have suffered a reduction rather than a twelve per cent. increase in their remuneration as a result of the reduction of rates on agricultural land; and if he proposes to take any action to rectify the position.

The earnings of county council rate collectors who are paid on a poundage basis are related directly to the size of their warrants and changes in the warrants are, therefore, reflected in the collector's earnings. The changes in the agricultural grant which were announced recently will affect the size of the rate collectors' warrants for 1964-65 but the effects on the earnings of individual collectors paid on a poundage basis will not be known until the warrants are prepared. The initiative in taking any action to revise the remuneration of rate collectors would rest with the local authorities and no question of any action on my part would arise except in the event of proposals for such revisions being submitted by the local authorities.
