Vol. 209 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Illegal Trading in Sugar.

9.

(South Tipperary) asked the Minister for Finance whether he issued any immediate directive to the excise authorities, or caused them to make enquiries, when the statement made by Lieutenant-General Costello, General Manager of the Irish Sugar Company, concerning sugar smuggling, illegal trading and profiteering was first brought to his notice; and, if so, the nature of any such directive or inquiries.

The Revenue Commissioners, whose functions include the prevention of smuggling, were aware of the risk of the illegal export of sugar before the statement by the Sugar Company was issued and took the necessary steps to deal with it. I do not direct them how they are to carry out their duties in such matters.
