Vol. 210 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Trade Union Legislation.

25.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he proposes to introduce legislation amending and bringing up to date the law relating to trade unions; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The general question of amending and bringing up to date the existing legislation relating to trade unions has been under review in my Department for some time past, but pending consultation with labour and employer interests affected I am not, as yet, in a position to make any statement on the matter.

I am considering specially in consultation with the labour and employer interests the need for new legislation on picketing and I hope to introduce such new legislation at an early date.

Will the Minister say if he proposes to have these consultations generally?

I do, yes. I propose to have consultations before any new legislation is introduced. I might say in relation to the latter part of the answer dealing with picketing that we have already had consultations with the labour interests.

Is it joint or separate?

Separate, as a rule.
