Vol. 210 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tralee School of Technology.

47.

asked the Minister for Education whether he is aware that at a recent meeting of the Tralee Urban District Council the urgent need for a school of technology in the area was stressed; and that it was stated that a site was available for such a school; and if he will investigate the possibility of setting up a school in Tralee.

I have been informed by the Secretary of the Tralee Urban District Council that at a recent meeting of the council it was decided to request me to provide a technical college in Tralee which would cater for candidates for the proposed Technical Leaving Certificate and for an extended range of apprenticeship training.

I may say that, in December, 1963, I authorised the Town of Tralee Vocational Education Committee to acquire a property in the vicinity of the vocational school in Tralee, for the purpose of providing further technical education facilities in Tralee. Negotiations are proceeding for the purchase of the property. The intention is that a centre be built there to provide for apprenticeship training and for courses leading to the Technical Schools Leaving Certificate Examination. Students from the Tralee area who may wish to follow technological courses after qualifying for the Technical School Leaving Certificate will be catered for in the regional technical colleges in Limerick and in Cork.
