Vol. 211 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Corporation Houses and Flats.

68.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that, notwithstanding the serious shortage of housing accommodation in Dublin, there is considerable delay on the part of the Dublin Corporation in the reletting of vacant houses and flats in the Corporation housing estates and if he will have steps taken to expedite the re-letting of vacant accommodation.

I am informed by the Corporation that there is no avoidable delay in the reletting by them of dwellings which become vacant in their estates.

Mr. Ryan

Is the Minister aware the Corporation have admitted they keep a number of vacant houses in reserve in case of a dangerous building emergency? Would the Minister say how many such houses are being kept in reserve by Dublin Corporation?

I do not know the actual number but I am aware a number of houses are kept in reserve which may result in the reletting of certain houses being delayed somewhat more than might be normal. While there may be some small pool of houses reserved for people who may have to to be removed from dangerous buildings, I feel they are entitled to do that, and that, in fact, they must do it.

It is my experience they let the houses too quickly and people will not take them because they are not cleaned out.

The Deputy is making a statement, not asking a question.

I am putting information before the House.
