asked the Minister for Health the percentage of the national income spent on health services by the Central Government in the years 1948 to 1951 inclusive, and in the years 1957 to 1963 inclusive.

The contributions from the Exchequer towards the cost of local health services by way of grants to health authorities under the Health Services (Financial Provisions) Act, 1947, amounted to the following percentages of the gross national product at current market prices for the years shown. It is the usual practice to calculate such percentages on the gross national product rather than on the national income. In each case the expenditure on which the percentage is calculated is that for the financial year ending on the 31st March after the end of the calendar year indicated and does not include capital expenditure:
