Vol. 211 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Talks with British Home Secretary.

56.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Justice the purpose of his recent meeting with the British Home Secretary; the outcome thereof; and whether any further meetings are proposed.

57.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will make a statement on the matters which were discussed in the talks regarding extradition between the Republic and the United Kingdom, giving the points on which agreement, if any, was reached; and whether political arrests, detention and imprisonment were also discussed.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 56 and 57 together.

On 26th June I discussed with the British Home Secretary the situation arising from a recent decision of the House of Lords as a result of which our warrants are no longer enforceable in Britain.

There was agreement on the desirability of having effective arrangements for the reciprocal enforcement of warrants in criminal cases. It was agreed also that talks at official level would take place at a later stage on the question of enforcing, on a reciprocal basis, maintenance orders and other court orders in civil cases.
