Vol. 211 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Crimes Against the Person.

58.

asked the Minister for Justice whether, in view of the large increase in crimes against the person, he will introduce legislation to provide for a scheme of compensation for victims of crimes of violence either in addition to, or in substitution for, the malicious damages code.

The question of paying compensation to the victims of violent crimes was investigated by the Interdepartmental Committee on Malicious Injuries. The report of the Committee will be submitted to the Government shortly. Pending consideration by the Government, I am not in a position to indicate what action may be taken on the matter referred to by the Deputy.
