Vol. 212 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - British Pension Recipients Resident in Ireland.

53.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare what were the results of his recent representations to the British Ministry of National Insurance requesting that persons in receipt of pensions under the National Insurance Acts 1960 and 1963 should receive the increases granted under the Acts even though they are residing in Ireland.

54.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare whether representations have been made to the British Ministry for Pensions and National Insurance to remove the restriction on the granting of increases in British pensions to persons now living in Ireland.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 53 and 54 together.

Preliminary discussions took place last May between officers of my Department and officers of the British Ministry of Pensions and National Insurance on the possibility of reciprocal arrangements in regard to pensions. During these discussions, the question of the non-payment by the British authorities to persons living here of increases in their British retirement pensions was raised. The problems involved in relation to the making of reciprocal arrangements are being studied on both sides and it is hoped to have further discussions at an early date. It is not possible at this stage to say what the outcome will be.
