Vol. 213 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployed Building Workers.

15.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce how many workers are unemployed as a result of the strike for reduced hours by the employees of the builders' providers; and if he is aware of any prospect of an early settlement.

Returns made to the Central Statistics Office to date indicate that some 1,500 employees of builders' providers firms are directly involved in the strike. No precise figures of the number of workers who, though not directly involved in the strike, have become unemployed as a result of the strike are available.

The Deputy will be aware that, following the rejection by the Unions of the recommendation of the Labour Court, the parties involved in this dispute agreed to come together under an independent chairman nominated by me but so far they have not been able to reach a settlement. I am keeping the position under constant review, and if there is any further assistance I can give, I will gladly give it.
