Vol. 213 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Educational Facilities for Autistic Children.

22.

asked the Minister for Education whether he has any plans for the establishment of special educational facilities for autistic children; and if, in view of the fact that the only centre for the treatment of these children at present deals only with children up to 12 years of age, he will take immediate steps to provide educational facilities for children over 12 years of age suffering from this type of mental handicap.

Facilities for the education of autistic children are available in two special national schools. There is no objection, from my Department's point of view, to the attendance of autistic children over 12 years of age at these schools.

Could the Minister kindly say where the schools are located?

One is St. Loman's national school, Palmerstown, County Dublin and the other is Benincasa, run by the Dominican nuns at Sion Hill, Blackrock, County Dublin.
