Vol. 213 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Purchasing Power of £.

3.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state by reference to the official cost of living index figures the amount of money necessary to buy today the same amount of goods as could have been bought in February, 1957, for £1.

It is estimated on the basis of the retail price index numbers that 25s. 8d. would be required at mid-August, 1964 (the latest date for which the index has been calculated) to purchase the same quantum of goods and services at retail prices as would £1 at mid-February, 1957.

The Fianna Fáil pound looks grimmer and grimmer.

It is easier getting the pound now.

4.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the purchasing value of £1 for each of the following years: 1939, 1940, 1945, 1950, 1955, 1960 and mid-November, 1964.

Estimates of the purchasing power of money are based on the retail price index numbers.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate in the Official Report a statement giving the estimated amounts required in the years specified to purchase the same quantum of goods and services at retail prices as would £1 at mid-August, 1964. The index for mid-November, 1964, has not yet been computed.

Following is the statement:—
