Vol. 213 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Purchase of Greyhounds for Bord na gCon.

16.

asked the Minister for Agriculture who are the agents appointed to buy greyhounds for Bord na gCon; what regulations cover the buying of these dogs whether by public auction or privately; if he will state the reasons why all such purchases are not made through public auctions; and why it is frequently the case that it is not disclosed to the owners that the dogs are being bought for Bord na gCon.

These are matters for Bord na gCon itself and even if the information sought was available to me it is not the practice to disclose particulars of this sort.

Would the Minister not think that this system of buying dogs privately has a danger in it and that the auction system would be safer for the seller, the buyer and the ultimate buyer in Great Britain?

That is not for me to say. It is a matter for Bord na gCon. It is up to the Board, which is a statutory body, to conduct its affairs as it thinks best. It is not for me to tell them what to do in matters of detailed administration.
