Vol. 213 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Students in Universities.

41.

asked the Minister for Education what is the present total number of students in all of the universities; and the total number of these students who are there (a) on local authority scholarships, (b) on funds made available from the central authority, and (c) on private scholarships of which his Department are aware.

In the academic year 1963-64, the most recent year for which figures are available, there was a total of 12,132 full-time students attending the universities. Of these approximately 9,000 were from the Twenty-Six Counties and approximately 600 from the Six Counties. Of the 9,000 mentioned there were 621 holding local authority and 139 holding State scholarships. I have no information as to the number of students who held private scholarships.

Would the Minister be good enough to give us again the figures for scholarships?

Local authorities, 621; State, 139.
