Vol. 213 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Aliens Attending Irish Universities.

42.

asked the Minister for Education whether he is aware that 2,500 aliens are attending Irish universities; and that Irish citizens cannot be facilitated or accommodated in the National University of Ireland; and if he can state the number of aliens receiving education at (a) NUI in Dublin (b) TCD and (c) other institutions of equivalent status in Dublin.

The most recent information available indicates that there were 2,515 students from overseas in attendance at university institutions in this country in the academic year 1963-64.

There is no information to show that Irish citizens cannot be facilitated or accommodated in the National University of Ireland because places have been given to overseas students.

The number of students from overseas in attendance at Irish University Institutions or institutions of equivalent status in Dublin in the academic year 1963-64 was: (1) University College, Dublin, 475. (2) Trinity College, Dublin, 1,300. (3) Royal College of Surgeons, 544.

Can the Minister state in respect of foreign students in NUI and in Trinity, are they paying economic fees or is their education being subsidised by the Irish Exchequer?

Some of them pay higher fees. The foreign students in Trinity College pay higher fees.

Is the Minister in a position to say whether their fees represent the economic cost of their education?

It would be very difficult to make any sort of estimate on that.
