Vol. 213 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Scholarships to Secondary Schools.

43.

asked the Minister for Education what is the total number of students attending secondary schools; and the number of places which can be filled from (a) local authority scholarships and (b) scholarships made available from central fund sources.

The total number of pupils in secondary schools in the current school-year is 93,002.

The total numbers of scholarships held in the school-year 1963-64 (a) under local authority scholarship schemes and (b) under the Department of Education direct scholarship schemes were 3,286 and 310 respectively. The number being held in the current school-year is not yet known, but will be very much greater in view of the greatly increased number of scholarships now being awarded. 2,070 local authority scholarships were awarded in 1964 as compared with 619 in 1960 and 100 direct Department scholarships in that year as compared with 18 in 1960.
