Vol. 213 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Export Guarantee Payments.

51.

asked the Minister for Agriculture the total sum paid by the State to the persons mentioned in the recent Report of the Committee of Public Accounts who claimed export guarantee payments by regular means.

The total amount paid to the persons in question under the Scheme of Guarantee Payments on Fat Cattle exported was £375,509 11. 5. of which £6,966 18. 3. was subsequently found to relate to claim forms irregularly altered. Further claims from these persons to the amount of £25,336 4. 1. were disallowed and no net loss fell on the Exchequer.

Did the Minister say there is no net loss? How was the larger sum got back?

It was disallowed. The further claims were not allowed.

So you have a quarter of a million in money?

No. But there is no net loss through this irregularity.

The first figure mentioned was a substantial one.

Yes, £375,509 11. 5. That was the total amount paid to the persons in question. Of that, only £6,966 was subsequently found to relate to an irregularity.

52.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will give details of the action to be taken in order to facilitate the taking of proceedings against persons claiming irregularly for guarantee payments for exports.

The scheme to which the Deputy refers was terminated at the end of March, 1962. Appropriate action has in accordance with the advice of the Attorney General been taken to initiate proceedings.
