Vol. 213 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment Benefit Recipients.

34.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state for the latest available date (a) the number of persons in receipt of unemployment benefit and the number of their dependants, (b) the number of dependants of persons in receipt of social welfare assistance in respect of whom weekly sums of five shillings are paid, and (c) the number of persons in categories (a) and (b) who are resident in Dublin city and county.

The number of persons in receipt of unemployment benefit and the estimated number of their dependants on 9th October, 1964, the latest date for which figures are available, were, respectively, (1) 20,422 and 34,003, including 10,259 adult dependants, for the whole country, and (2) 6,711 and 10,201, including 3,006 adult dependants, for Dublin city and county.

It is assumed that (b) of the question is concerned with unemployment assistance. On this basis and in relation to 25th July, 1964, the latest date for which figures are available, the estimated numbers of dependants of unemployment assistance recipients in respect of whom weekly sums of 5/- are paid were: for the whole country —9,300; for Dublin city and county— 1,585.

With regard to the unemployment assistance figures, it is necessary to mention that they relate to a date when the level of applications was affected by the operation of the annual Employment Period Orders and also that the 5/- rate applies only to the third and subsequent children of recipients.
