Vol. 213 No. 5

Committee on Finance. - Imposition of Duties (Confirmation of Orders) Bill, 1964: Committee and Final Stages.

Question proposed: "That section I stand part of the Bill."

Perhaps the Minister could say why there is such a long delay in bringing in legislation to confirm these duties. Most of these, I notice, came into operation in the early part of 1963.

That is hardly right because the original Act requires that these orders be confirmed by legislation within 12 months of their being made.

The first one on iron and steel products came into operation on the 5th February, 1963. It is a technical point but I should like an explanation.

The requirement in the parent Act is that they must be confirmed in the calendar year following the year in which they are made.

So you still have a few days in hand?

That is right.

The two reductions of ten per cent—are they affected by separate orders?

They are included in this.

There is an omnibus Order, Order No. 262. That is the last one, in Part II of the Schedule.

That applies to the ten per cent.

That applies to the ten per cent reduction on 1st January last.
