Vol. 213 No. 5

Private Members' Business. - Industrial Grants (Amendment) Bill, 1964: Report and Final Stages.

I move amendment No. 1:

In page 2, section 3, between lines 41 and 42, to insert the following subsection:

(2) Section 11 of the Shannon Free Airport Development Company Limited Act, 1959, shall not apply in relation to grants of the kind that may be made by virtue of this section.

The purpose of this amendment is to extend the special grants legislation that we have just passed by way of amendment to industries established in the Shannon Free Airport Development area. In section 11 of the Shannon Free Airport Development Company Limited Act, 1959, it was provided that after the passing of that Act An Foras Tionscal would not make a grant in respect of the establishment, development or maintenance of an industrial undertaking at the Airport. There is some doubt as to whether a grant of the kind provided for under this Bill could be made available in the Shannon Free Airport Development area by the Shannon Free Airport Development Company.

I think it is desirable that these special grants should be administered by the one authority. It may be that there are industries within the Shannon Free Airport Development Area which would require the type of assistance we are providing in this Bill in the special circumstances of the British import surcharge. The purpose of this amendment is, therefore, to extend this provision to the Shannon Free Airport Development Company and An Foras Tionscal will be available to receive applications from industries in the Shannon Airport area for these special purposes.

Amendment agreed to.
Bill reported with amendment, received for final consideration and passed.

This Bill is certified a Money Bill in accordance with Article 22 of the Constitution.
