Vol. 213 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Comprehensive Schools.

23.

asked the Minister for Education whether pupils who complete an academic course in a comprehensive school will be permitted to enter a university; and whether pupils who complete a practical or manual-training course will be channelled into schools of technology.

Pupils in the comprehensive schools will not be divided in the early years into those following an academic course and those following a practical course. The essence of the compresenhive idea is to postpone any such division until pupils have completed the Intermediate Certificate course at age 15 plus. By reference to the results obtained by them in the Intermediate Certificate examination and their showing at previous tests pupils will be guided towards an academic Leaving Certificate or towards the Technical Schools Leaving Certificate. The former will admit them to a university, the latter to certain university faculties or to a college of technology.

24.

asked the Minister for Education if it is intended to convert any existing technical schools into comprehensive schools.

In general the comprehensive schools will absorb any existing vocational school within the areas of their operation. This will be the position in Carraroe, Cootehill and Glenties.
