Vol. 213 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Withdrawal of American Liner.

5.

andMr. R. Barry asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he is now in a position to indicate the outcome of the representations made to the US authorities consequent on the withdrawal of the cross-Atlantic liners from Cobh, County Cork; and whether any effort has been made to energise opinion in the United States in support of the restoration of those lines.

The liner "America" which was withdrawn from the North Atlantic traffic has now been sold by US Lines. The question of securing its replacement by another vessel is being pursued by our diplomatic representatives in the US at my request but I am not yet in a position to say what the outcome may be.

I do not consider that any useful purpose would be served by measures of the kind advocated by the Deputy.

I may mention that following withdrawal of the "America" the Holland America Line have announced their intention of increasing the number of calls by their vessels at Cobh from ten to 18 next year.
