Vol. 213 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Civil Service Personnel.

9.

asked the Minister for Finance the total number of civil servants on the pay roll of the State on 31st March 1959 and on 31st March 1964.

According to the Civil Service census, which relates to the first working day of each calendar year, the total number of civil servants was 28,039 on 1st January, 1959 and 30,383 on 1st January, 1964. Of these 92 and 84, respectively, were not in receipt of remuneration because of their being, for instance, on special leave or sick leave without pay. I regret that statistics for the dates mentioned by the Deputy are not available.

It is rule by civil servants completely.

10.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Finance the total number of civil servants both temporary and established for the latest available date; and the number and rank of such earning weekly less than (a) £15, (b) £12 10, (c) £10, (d) £9 and (e) £8.

The total number of civil servants, both temporary and established, on 1st January, 1964—the latest date for which statistics are available—was 30,383.

It has not been possible in the time available to compile the information sought by the Deputy in the second part of the question. If the Deputy repeats this part of the question at a later date, I hope to have the information available.
