asked the Minister for Finance if he will indicate the total number of civil servants (a) permanent and (b) temporary in employment each year since 1957.

The available statistics are set out in a tabular statement which, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report.

The figures are taken from the Civil Service Census which relates to the first working day of the calendar year; figures are not yet available in respect of 1st January, 1965. The 1957 and 1958 figures include temporary classes—mainly Scale-payment SubPostmasters, Branch Managers of Employment Exchanges and certain part-time employees—whose estimated total number is 2,700 at most and who were excluded from the Census from 1959 onwards.

asked the Minister for Finance the number and rank of both temporary and established civil servants earning weekly less than (a) £15, (b) £12. 10, (c) £10, (d) £9 and (e) £8.

The information sought by the Deputy is set out in a tabular statement which, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report.
