Vol. 214 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Decimal Coinage System.

29.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that a number of countries have decided to adopt the decimal coinage system within the next few years; and if he will indicate what steps are being taken to adopt this system in the Republic.

I am aware that the position is as stated in the first part of the question. As regards the second part of the question, the Government decided in February, 1962, that a decimal system of currency should be adopted here and set up a working party representative of the Central Bank and Government Departments to advise on the appropriate time for making the change and on the steps necessary to effect it in the most economical way.

The working party's report is being printed at present and I am arranging for its presentation to the Houses of the Oireachtas and publication at an early date.

While interested parties and the general public were invited to make their views known to the working party, I feel that they should now have the opportunity of commenting on the conclusions in the report before decisions are taken.
