Vol. 214 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drainage of County Donegal River.

38.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware of the damage being done to houses and thousands of acres of land in the Pettigo area of County Donegal as a result of the flooding of the Termon river; and, if so, if he will approach the Six County Government and endeavour to have a joint project undertaken by the two Governments for the drainage of this river in conjunction with the drainage of the Derg river.

No representations have been made to the Commissioners of Public Works about the River Derg and no action is proposed in regard to it.

An engineering inspection was made of the Termon river in 1960 to consider it for an Intermediate River Scheme. This small river forms the border between Donegal and Fermanagh along six miles before its outfall into Lough Erne. It has a mountainous catchment and the yield of damaged land is too small and too scattered to make it a feasible proposition for arterial drainage. In view of the present commitments of the Commissioners of Public Works in regard to arterial drainage and the extent of the problem throughout the country, I am advised that there is no prospect of the Termon river being dealt with at present.
