Vol. 214 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Increased Hotel Prices.

44.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether his attention has been drawn to the references to increases in hotel prices proposed for the coming season; and if he is satisfied that they are justified and desirable in the best interests of the tourist industry.

I am aware that some hotels have increased their tariffs for the coming season.

The fixing of hotel tariffs is, of course, a matter for individual hotel managements. I am, however, naturally concerned at price increases in any sector of the tourist industry. It is known that hoteliers have had to face heavy increases in costs in the past year. Some hoteliers who have absorbed the increases deserve to be commended. Schemes which Bord Fáilte and the Council for the Education, Recruitment and Training of Staff in the hotel industry are carrying through should increase overall efficiency and raise the standards of hotel management. I should hope that any economies resulting will be reflected in at least a levelling-off in hotel prices.
