Vol. 214 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Display of Shaw Statue.

129.

asked the Minister for Education if it is proposed to place the statue of George Bernard Shaw, now in the National Gallery, on permanent display at St. Stephen's Green; and, if not, why.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply of 5th February, 1963. I have nothing to add to that reply.

Would the Minister be kind enough to say what that reply was? My memory does not go back so far.

Generally, that the statue forms part of the collection for which the Board of Governors and Guardians of the National Gallery are responsible and that I brought the Deputies proposal to their attention. That is the limit of my power.

In view of the fact that this man has endowed the National Gallery with over £500,000, does the Minister not think a little pressure should be employed to have his likeness publicly displayed and some credit afforded to him in this, his native city?

The bust is in the Gallery.

What proportion of the citizens go into it?

The Deputy may be there himself yet.

Between the Taoiseach and O'Neill, probably around 1970 at the end of the Second Programme.
