Vol. 214 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Closing of Concession Road.

138.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that the concession road which passes through the Six Counties between Crilly and Pettigo, County Donegal, has been closed by the Six County authorities since 1st January, 1965, thereby causing considerable inconvenience to County Donegal farmers; and, if so, if he will make immediate representation to the appropriate authorities to have the said road reopened.

From preliminary inquiries, my Department has learned that there has been no closure of this concession road but that as a result of some laxity in the observance by stock-owners of routine requirements on the Northern Ireland side in respect of the movement of stock along the road the authorities there have taken steps to ensure that the requirements are in future strictly observed in all cases.

Is the Minister aware that the road has been spiked, thereby preventing travel from one part of the State to another? Would he, in this time of goodwill, approach the appropriate Minister on the other side and see that these spikes are removed?

As far as I am aware, there is no deterioration in the position.

Spikes have been inserted in the roadway.

I am not sure I am the Minister who should make approaches of this sort.

As Minister for Agriculture, interested in the affairs of the agricultural community——

In every single farmer.

Then do this little act on their behalf.

I shall look into it.
