asked the Minister for Finance if he will state in respect of the years ending 31st March (1) 1948, (2) 1955, (3) 1964 and (4) 1965 (estimated) the total remuneration, inclusive of cost of living bonus, payable to each of the following class of officer in the Departments, other than the Department of Finance: (a) secretary, (b) assistant secretary, (c) principal, and (d) assistant principal, differentiating in each case between single and married rate; and whether there are any other allowances, such as children's allowances, payable to each of the classes mentioned during each of the years in question, and the amounts thereof.

The answer is in the form of a tabular statement which, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report.

Allowances:

Children's Allowances payable at the annual rates per child indicated to a married man on Scale B eligible to receive them under the applicable provisions. Normally no other allowance (apart from travelling and subsistence allowances) payable to officers in these categories.

In the foregoing table:—

A applies to (i) a woman or (ii) an unmarried man whose remuneration is governed by differentiation on a marriage basis;

B applies to (i) a married man or (ii) an unmarried man whose remuneration is not governed by differentiation on a marriage basis.
