Vol. 214 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition of B & I Company.

15.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power when he expects to introduce the necessary legislation for the taking over by the State of the B & I Steam Packet Company; and if he has anything further to add to previous Government statements on the takeover.

16.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power what national advantages are expected to result from the proposed acquisition of the B & I Steam Packet Company Limited; and if he will state the details of the proposals.

I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 15 and 16 together.

A Bill to authorise the acquisition of the British and Irish Steam Packet Co. Ltd. and to provide for ancillary matters has been introduced and, as already indicated in the official announcement in the matter, I will make a full statement on the Second Stage which has been fixed for 23rd February, 1965.

Does the Minister think it will be better run by the State than it is by private enterprise?

Ad interim, would the Minister say how many vessels are involved in the acquisition?

Some seven vessels are involved.
