Vol. 214 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Anthracite and Phurnacite Imports.

23.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will consider the further restriction of the importation of Welsh anthracite and of the importation of phurnacite in view of the fact that at present the Irish mines are unable to find a market for their output and that men are being laid off.

It has recently been brought to my notice that anthracite producers are experiencing difficulty in disposing of their output.

There has been no recent increase in imports of anthracite. The difficulties of the producers arise from some increase in home production coupled with a reduction in demand due apparently to the relatively mild weather and increasing use of other fuels. I am having the position further examined.
