Vol. 214 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - House Insurance Premiums.

34.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if insurance companies have informed him of their intention to increase the premiums on house or content cover premiums; and, if so, if he proposes to take any action in the matter.

35.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is satisfied that the substantial increase proposed in fire insurance premiums is justified; if he has investigated the matter; and, if so, with what result.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 34 and 35 together. I have no authority to regulate these premium rates which are determined by underwriting experience. The statutory returns of the companies deposited with me indicate that substantial underwriting losses have been incurred on fire insurance in this country in recent years.
