Vol. 214 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cloghan (Offaly) Traffic Signs.

82.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will arrange (1) to reduce the speed limit to 30 miles per hour at Cloghan, County Offaly as a request to this effect was made by all concerned, and (2) to have better road signs at Hill Street and Castle Street, denoting major road ahead as a request that this be done has been made without success to the local authority and if he will cause a full investigation into this matter.

The Road Traffic (Speed Limits) Regulations, 1963, are at present being reviewed with a view to amending them. As this review will affect speed limits on arterial routes only, the village of Cloghan, County Offaly, will not be included in it. A review of speed limits on non-arterial routes will be initiated later this year, and the question of reducing the speed limit from 40 m.p.h. to 30 m.p.h, at this village can be considered as part of that review.

Responsibility for the provision of traffic signs, other than speed limit signs, rests with the road authorities who act at the request or with the consent of the Garda Síochána. I understand that there are "Yield right of way" signs both in Hill Street and Castle Street and that they are considered to be adequate. However, I shall ask the county council and the Garda to look into the signposting at these streets.
