Vol. 214 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork City Bridge.

87.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, having regard to general public disquiet respecting the condition of Parnell Bridge in Cork city, he will have it examined by acknowledged bridge experts with a view to satisfying himself that it is capable of taking the growing volume of heavy modern traffic to which it is subjected.

I have given instructions for the holding of a public local inquiry into the application made by the Cork Corporation for a bridge order for replacement of this bridge, and arrangements are being made accordingly in consultation with the City Manager. The inquiry will deal with all relevant aspects of the case. I understand that the bridge is structurally sound but that the carriageway surface needs renewal. As regards the capacity of the bridge to take a growing volume of heavy traffic, I agree that this matter needs expert examination and I have informed the Corporation that evidence based on expert traffic surveys will be expected to be forthcoming at the local inquiry.
