Vol. 214 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Oranmore and Browne Estate.

97.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will make a statement regarding the estate of Oranmore and Browne, Claremorris, County Mayo, giving as much information as is possible in regard to (a) whether the usual mile limit for giving additional land to local congests will apply, (b) how many migrants' holdings it is expected will be allocated and, if local congestion will be cleared up before such holdings are given to applicants from other parts of the county, (c) whether provision is being made for those who previously were in employment as herds to the former owner, and (d) when it is expected that a comprehensive scheme will be prepared by the Land Commission.

Following an allocation of land for State afforestation purposes and the recent disposal of Castlemac-garrett House with some amenity land, the area pending for allotment on this estate is approximately 1,000 acres. The detailed local inquiries, preliminary to formulation of allotment proposals for this substantial acreage, are now well advanced and the planning of a scheme of division will be put in hands shortly. However, even if resale proposals for this estate were finalised, it would be contrary to established practice to disclose the details in advance of allotment.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary keep in mind the fact that the local people there will certainly be annoyed if their congestion problems are not settled before people are brought in from any other part of the country?

I will convey the Deputy's remarks to the Minister.

It is accepted already.
