Vol. 214 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Extension of School Year.

117.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the concern expressed by parents and teachers at the proposed extension of the school year by extending the summer term which is the period when a number of families find it convenient to take summer holidays; if he will consider for the future an extension of other school terms rather than the summer term; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I assume the Deputy is referring to the recent introduction of a minimum school year of 200 days for secondary schools. In fact, some 50 per cent of the schools were already complying with this requirement.

Arising out of the rule, representations were made by school associations and by individual school authorities requesting the later commencement of the Certificate Examinations. My Department reverted, therefore, to the practice obtaining up to recent years of commencing the examinations not earlier than 10th June. Subject to the minimum school-year requirement the length of several vacation periods is a matter for determination by individual school managers.

The Minister is aware that Bord Fáilte have promoted a scheme for family holidays in June and that this change to some extent conflicts with that. Would the Minister consider extending other terms in order to fit in with that arrangement which, I understand, suits parents and teachers better than the proposals at present?

My action was as a result of representations from the schools. Balancing the representations from Bord Fáilte against those from the schools, I think I have to come down in favour of the schools.
